R36S Clones & Alternatives: What to Know Before Buying

The R36S is itself part of a large ecosystem of low-cost Chinese retro handhelds. Understanding what counts as a "clone" โ€” and which alternatives are genuinely better โ€” saves you money and frustration.

The R36S Ecosystem Explained

The R36S runs on the Rockchip RK3326 chip, the same SoC used in Anbernic's RG351 line. This chip became the basis for dozens of similar devices from 2020 onwards. None of these manufacturers own the design outright โ€” the hardware reference design is openly available.

This means:

  • Multiple sellers sell "R36S" units from different factories
  • Quality varies between batches and sellers
  • The firmware is interchangeable (ArkOS works on all RK3326 devices)

Common R36S Clones to Know

Same Hardware, Different Badge

These devices share the same PCB and chip:

  • R36H โ€” Horizontal (landscape) shell, same internals
  • R36 Pro โ€” Hall-effect sticks, same chip
  • GameSir X-series budget โ€” occasional rebadges
  • PowKiddy RGB30 โ€” different shell, same chip

All of these run ArkOS identically.

Lower Quality Knockoffs

These look like the R36S but cut corners:

  • TN panel instead of IPS โ€” washed out colors, terrible viewing angles
  • Single SD card slot โ€” can't separate OS and games
  • Lower capacity battery โ€” stated 3500 mAh but actually 2000 mAh

How to spot them:

  • Very low prices (under $25)
  • Sellers with no reviews or brand identity
  • No mention of IPS display in specs
  • Blurry or low-quality product photos

How to Verify Your R36S is Real

See our guide to the original R36S for the full verification checklist, including weight, button feel, and chip confirmation.

Screen Test

IPS panels have:

  • Consistent color at all viewing angles
  • No "glow" or backlight bleed in corners
  • Deep blacks (relatively)

TN panels show color inversion when viewed from below or the sides.

Dual SD Slot Check

A genuine R36S has two microSD slots:

  • TF1 at the top-left of the back panel (system)
  • TF2 at the bottom-left (games)

Single-slot units are knockoffs using cheaper PCB designs.

Weight

A real R36S with battery weighs approximately 235โ€“250 grams. Suspiciously light units (~180 g) often have smaller batteries.

Genuine Alternatives Worth Considering

The R36S Sweet Spot

The R36S remains one of the best values at its price point specifically because:

1. The IPS screen is genuinely good for the price

2. Dual SD slots make firmware management easy

3. ArkOS support is excellent โ€” regular updates, large community

4. The form factor (vertical, shoulder buttons) suits most retro games well

For games up to PS1, N64 (most titles), GBA, and arcade โ€” the R36S does everything you need.

For PSP, Dreamcast, or NDS you'll be happier with the R36 Max or R36S Ultra, which use the faster RK3566 chip.

Buying Advice

โœ… Buy from Amazon for easy returns if you get a knockoff
