Installing ArkOS on R36S Clones (RetroSnap, GameLab & Other Rebrands)
If you bought a RetroSnap, GameLab, or another rebranded budget handheld instead of a listing that specifically says "R36S," you might assume you're locked out of custom firmware. You're not โ as long as the hardware underneath matches, ArkOS installs and runs exactly the same way.
Why This Works: Firmware Follows the Chip, Not the Brand
As covered in our guide to spotting a fake R36S, RetroSnap, GameLab, and the R36S itself are all built around the same Rockchip RK3326 reference design. ArkOS is written for the chip and board layout โ not for any particular seller's branding. If your device uses the RK3326, the standard R36S ArkOS image works on it.
Step 1: Confirm Your Chip Before Flashing
Before doing anything, confirm what's actually inside your unit:
- Check the original product listing or box for "RK3326" or "Rockchip 3326"
- If unlisted, check the stock firmware's system/about menu, if accessible
- Compare your unit's screen resolution (640ร480, 3.5") and dual SD card slots against the standard R36S spec โ a strong match is a good (though not certain) sign
If your device uses the newer RK3566 chip instead (larger 720ร720 square screen, Wi-Fi built in), use the R36 Max / R36S Ultra ArkOS build instead โ flashing the wrong chip's image will not boot.
Step 2: Follow the Standard Install Process
Once the chip is confirmed as RK3326, the process is identical to our main ArkOS installation guide:
1. Download the RG351P/V ArkOS image (the RK3326 build)
2. Flash it to a microSD card with Balena Etcher or Rufus
3. Insert into the system SD slot and boot
4. Let ArkOS expand the filesystem on first boot (3โ5 minutes)
5. Add BIOS files and your games to the second SD card

What Might Be Different on a Clone/Rebrand
A handful of things vary between factory batches, even on identical chips:
Screen Panel Variants
Some clone units ship with slightly different display panels, which occasionally need a different DTB (Device Tree Blob) file for correct colour/timing. If your screen looks wrong after flashing (colour shift, scrolling artefacts), check the ArkOS documentation for alternate DTB files matching your panel version.
Button Mapping
Occasionally a rebrand's face buttons are wired in a different order. If A/B or X/Y feel swapped after installing ArkOS, this is a quick fix in RetroArch's input settings โ no reflashing needed.
Case Fit
This doesn't affect firmware, but worth knowing: SD card slot positions are generally standard across RK3326 clones, so card access shouldn't be an issue regardless of the shell design.
When It Won't Work
ArkOS won't install correctly if:
- Your device uses a different chip family entirely (not RK3326 or RK3566) โ this is rare for R36S-style listings but worth ruling out
- The bootloader has been locked down by the manufacturer (uncommon in this hardware category, but not impossible)
If flashing fails to boot after multiple attempts with a verified-correct image, your unit may use non-standard hardware โ at that point, treat it as a different device rather than an R36S clone.
Bottom Line
The brand printed on a rebranded handheld doesn't determine whether ArkOS will work โ the chip does. If you've confirmed RK3326 hardware, follow the standard ArkOS installation guide exactly as written. The only extra step for clone/rebrand devices is double-checking your chip and screen panel before you flash.
Once ArkOS is running, your device has access to the same 18,000+ game compatibility list as every other R36S-family handheld.
