Nintendo's 1995 stereoscopic console is its most famous commercial failure โ sold for barely a year, red-on-black only, and played by leaning into a headset. Its small library includes genuinely good games, Virtual Boy Wario Land chief among them.
Emulation is full-speed, but the hardware was stereoscopic and a flat handheld screen cannot reproduce that. Emulators offer anaglyph or side-by-side modes; the default red-on-black single view is playable but tiring, and this is a hardware limitation rather than a performance one.
The R36 handheld family runs Virtual Boy titles with playable compatibility out of the box.
